Casualty

"Something From The Heart" 2nd February 2001

Plot Outline:In the episode, Marina plays Jane Taylor, an MP (a politician) who is having an illicit affair with a man named Mark Fletcher (played by Shaun Scott). While going to meet him at a hotel, their secrecy backfires - quite literally - when a gas explosion tears the hotel apart and traps Mark inside. Matters are further complicated when Charlie Fairhead (played by Derek Thompson) attends the scene; Jane has controversial views about the National Health Service.

Quotes:
Jane: I just feel it, the way...
Mark: Has anybody said anything?
Jane: No.
Mark: So?
Jane: The kids. The kids look at me sometimes, or Alan.
Mark: That's just paranoia. There's no way that they can know a thing. We've been so careful.
Jane: What are we going to do Mark?
Mark: Leave. Leave, bring the kids and come live with me. I mean you said yourself, your marriage has been a sham for years. You just stay together because of the kids.
Jane: So, what did David White [the reporter] say to you? I can't afford to be exposed!
Mark: They always hear some rumour somewhere.
Jane: About me?!
Mark: No, he didn't mention any names. He knows nothing about you specifically.
Jane: Oh, specifically.
Mark: We've been here before, haven't we? 16 years ago, I fell in love with you and I'm hearing an echo. You don't want to end it but you don't know how it can go on.
Jane: There's too much at stake here.
Mark: Oh, right.
Jane: No! If this comes out. Everything I've worked for. What am I supposed to do? Start again, square one?!
Mark: What are we going to do? This for another couple of years? It's like were in some parallel universe. Inside of this room, no reality at all.
Jane: Hey.
Mark: We've done nothing to be ashamed of.
Jane: Do you think the press would agree?
Mark: I don't give a damn. I don't give a damn what the press think. We can just walk out of here, hand in hand.
Jane: Oh, come on.
Mark: We've done nothing wrong.
Jane: Oh really. How can we? That's just idealistic.
Mark: No.
Jane: Everything with us is idealistic, always has been. That's the problem. [They kiss] I can't do this, I have to be pragmatic.

Review: Though I am british, I'm not much of a fan of much british TV. I was familiar with Casualty, watched it when I was younger so I was pleased when I found out that Marina was going to star in an episode.
I enjoyed watching this. Marina played this kind of character very well, a business woman, a MP (Politician). It is very true, a comment Marina made in an interview, about British TV not being as glamourous! It is a good plot for the episode, but when watching it, the other B and C plots just annoyed me. I don't particularly like any of the rest of the Casualty cast, regular or guest stars but they're fine for what they do. It was wonderful to see Marina in something else, a British programme. And, she didn't have to do an accent, though going back to her real one might have been quite an adjustment!

Review: The bloke I bought Marina's 'Raffles' episode from on ebay was kind enough to copy the episode Marina guest starred in of 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' too!
The plot was pretty good, interested me, although I probably wouldn't have spent my time watching this if Marina wasn't in it. It was an excellent mystery for Sherlock Holmes to solve. And, being a huge TNG fan, it was facinating to see a different represenation of Holmes and Watson as opposed to Data and Geordi! I noticed many similaries in the ways the characters are played though.
Marina's role consisted of only speaking in Italian, which was successful in making the 'villain' family more mysterious, yet while still giving the audience the gist of what is going on. It was a pleasure to see Marina in this, which was the year before she left for the U.S. to look for work and ended up getting the role of Deanna Troi. The character, Lucrezia, is shrowded in mystery. First time we see her, she is in a fight with her husband and gets hit. He is later killed. We never truely know what is going on with her family, or we do and I couldn't quite follow it! Murder and the theft of a black pearl are involved. I didn't know Marina spoke italian, either that or she learnt it extremely well for this role! Marina looked the part, and looked fantastic in the period costumes!
